Ty and his diabetes scare!

I have a very sweet, sensitive and dramatic son.  He is also smart and uses his flare for the dramatic to get things done.  His name is Tyler.

Just a little background before the story.  Tyler loves to eat and during his youth he had no shut off valve.  He is my one kid who would go treat-or-treating and bring home a gianormous bag of candy in the biggest pillowcase he could find.  He would then hole up in his bedroom and proceed to eat the entire bag.  About an hour later he would hurl.  We were then done with Halloween candy and Tyler.  All in all it was a great way to get rid of his Halloween candy.

Tyler also has a gift for picking up little pieces of information and trivia and using it against you or to lure you into his trap.

Lastly, Tyler is the kid at school that knows the names of every teacher, secretary, counselor, janitor and lunch lady.  He loves the lunch ladies and secretaries the most.  They usually love him.

Tyler always refers to these people by their first name.  For instance,  often he would come home from school and say something like this, "Marge told me today that she's having problems with her sister Wilma's son's new girlfriend" and then off he'd go on some incredible story.

Lastly, Tyler has several relatives and friends who have diabetes so he has learned all the ins and outs of the disease.

This is Tyler in 3rd grade.  Doesn't he look innocent?

One day while Tyler was in third grade I got a phone call from the school.  This is not an unusual event by the way.  It was the school nurse.

 This is our conversation:

Nurse:  "Mrs. Taylor, we need to talk about your son Tyler" (Now you should be hearing this in a nasalish tone much like Roz on Monsters Inc.)

Me: "Ok" (thinking whats new)

Nurse: "Well we just need more support from you with Tyler's diabetes.  We just can't afford to continue providing daily snacks for him whenever his blood sugars fall."

Me: "Huh?"

Nurse: "You need to send a snack with Tyler every day and maybe even send something that I can have here in my office to give to Tyler when he has an emergency."

Me:  "What does Tyler have?"

Nurse:  "I'm talking about Tyler's diabetes!"  (She is getting snippy)

Me:  "When did he get that?"

Nurse:  "You mean he doesn't have diabetes?"

Me:  "Not that I'm aware of unless you discovered it."

Nurse: "Well, Mrs. Taylor, Tyler told us he has diabetes and has to have a snack every day at certain times for when his blood sugars fall.  His teacher informed me of this and the teacher is not able to provide Tyler's snacks and so she sends him to me but I just can't provide his snacks every day.  We only have snacks for emergencies."

Me: "Tyler does not have diabetes but he loves snacks and loves to miss class and especially likes to talk to secretaries and nurses."

Nurse:  "Oh my."

Me:  "Send him back to class and tell him to knock it off."

Nurse:  Click!

All this blogging has made my sugars fall so I'm off to eat one of Tyler's snacks.
